We love Donkey Kong here at the arcade!

We love Donkey Kong here at the arcade!

We celebrate Donkey Kong everyday here at the arcade as not only is it a classic 80s arcade game, but it is also the very game that started Royce’s Arcade Warehouse! Appropriately around the time of Donkey Kong’s anniversary four years ago is when we opened our doors to the public. Not only are our anniversary dates close, but the very Donkey Kong in the center of the arcade is the first ever arcade game we owned! It started its journey in Royce’s garage as an old game in need of repair. After getting it back into running order, Royce began building out his collection over the course of a year, and eventually opened the doors of Royce’s Arcade for the very first time in the first week of July 2014.

We could not be anymore proud of this classic game and have even had the entrance of the arcade themed out to represent the Donkey Kong and Mario Bros universe. Come out this weekend to show your love for Donkey Kong for its 37th birthday! It even still has the original working joystick still on to this day!

Our very own giant size Donkey Kong is often the first thing families and friends see when they walk through our doors.

Here you can see where we have incorporated the gameplay of Donkey Kong, by placing ladders and Mario and Princess Peach at the top of the construction beam.

This classic game very rarely leaves our arcade as it is a permanent staple to the arcade and to our history!

Happy 37th Birthday to Donkey Kong!

Happy 37th Birthday to Donkey Kong!

From all of us here at the arcade we just wanted to share our appreciation for another great game’s anniversary! From this one game a whole gaming universe was born. On July 09, 1981 a huge contribution to the arcade golden age was released. This was the first time we saw the iconic characters of Donkey Kong and Mario, then known as Jumpman! For all our Mario Bros. fans out there we encourage you to come show your support for the game that started it all, this weekend at the arcade!

Donkey Kong and Popeye are the same!

Donkey Kong and Popeye are the same!

Donkey Kong’s 37 anniversary is coming up so in honor of that here is a little Donkey Kong fact you may not have known!

By now you must know that Mario was first know as Jumpman, but did you know he was almost Popeye?

Originally Nintendo set out to make a Popeye arcade game where Popeye saves Olive from Brutus’s capture. However, Nintendo was unable to acquire legal permission over these iconic characters and had to make adjustments in order to be seen as an original design and not waste all the time they had spent on the project. Video game designer on the project, Shigeru Miyamoto, decided to replicate these iconic characters with different artistic stylings of the characters and art in order to be able to deliver a much anticipated game they already spent time building.

Most identifiable is the character of Brutus of which has been turned into the now equally iconic character of Donkey Kong.

The character Olive Oil has now become a slightly smaller and blonder character which is the first rendition of Princess Peach.

Popeye was transformed into the character Jumpman, which is now famously adored by many as the character Mario from the Mario Bros saga.

The adaptation of these characters went on to launch one of Nintendo’s most successful game series, Mario Brothers featuring the beloved hero Mario and adored damsel in distress, Princess Peach.  Eventually Nintendo was able to make their own Popeye game a few years later and many will spot the similarities between Donkey Kong and Popeye’s game-plays as the concepts and designs are almost identical.
